RYAN SIMMONS: ALMOST HANDSOME

justdreamingaway:

Farewell to the great George Kuchar. This week cinema lost one of the founders of do-it-yourself film-making. For those of you who don’t know the work of George (or his twin brother Mike) Kuchar, I suggest you take a moment and check out anything from his huge catalog of goofy/interesting/personal/hilarious/bizarre/fascinating films. George Kuchar was youtube before the internet even existed. George Kuchar was living evidence that at the end of the day filmmaking comes from a desire to make films.

It’s easy to not make a film. It takes guts to get out there and make one.

Unfortunately (and I know I’m not alone) I often find myself brainstorming reasons to back out of a project instead of reasons to forge ahead. I have literally convinced myself on multiple occasions not to follow through on projects even though at one point I thought they were great ideas. I waste so much time letting my “now” brain convince me that my “then” brain was wrong about a good idea. That’s insane.

Grab a camera and make a film.

If you have a friend and a way to get a camera, you have no excuse.

I know it shouldn’t take the death of a great filmmaker to spur a call to action. But, in honor of George Kuchar, who spent much of his life teaching film to others and rallying students to make films, it seems only appropriate to scold myself on the internet in the off chance that someone else will find the feeling of “not-going-for-it” familiar and do something about it. Mind you, I’m mostly just mad at myself for all the times I put on the brakes. So don’t think I’m attacking you or judging you (because you probably have your reasons), but if it sounds familiar, feel free to overhear it.

Filmmakers make films. Storytellers tell stories. Cooks cook. Decide what you are (even if its temporary) and go do that. Excuses are just excuses.

Stay Bright.

Word the fuck up.
